When it comes to looking your best, Comedian Billy Crystal said it best back in his days Saturday Night Live days in his video, “You Look Marvelous”:

You know, my father used to say to me, ” ‘Nando, don’t be a schnook.

It’s not how you feel, it’s how. You. Look!”

He was mahvelous!

But you, dahling, hmmmm, you look mahvelous!

Absolutely mahvelous!

And this is from my tongue which is deep inside my body

It’s better to look good than to feel good.”

As we age and lose volume in our faces, the overlying skin loses support causing lines, folds, jowls, and a tired appearance.

While at the gym the other day, I noticed a friend lifting weights while lying down on her back.  As you all know, especially women, if you want to look your best, just lay down on you back with your face up and have your “headshot” taken in that position.  I commented to my friend that her face looks great in that position which led to a conversation about aging and volume loss/replacement in the face.

She shared that she had once tried “fillers” in her face, and “I would never do that again!” because it made her look so unnaturally “funny” (i.e. The Housewives of Beverly Hills).  I asked, “What percentage of your filler result do you think was due to the filler, and what percentage was due to the person who injected you?”  She replied that she thought it was 50-50, a common belief.

In reality, aesthetic results from the replacement of lost facial volume with fillers is probably 98% dependent on the injector, 2% dependent on the various fillers used.  Rejuvenating a face with fillers (Sculptra, Juvederm, Restylane, Radiesse, etc.) is an art.  Each individual face is a palate that deserves evaluation and unique treatment to achieve natural results.

Getting “filled” is not a commodity that is the same in everyone’s hands, just as every painting is not a da Vinci or Picasso (though you should prefer a facial plastic surgeon that has studied Leonardo’s “Golden Proportions” over Picasso’s facial proportions).

So if you or a friend have had a “bad” experience with facial fillers in the past(read “lips and cheeks on a stick”), there is no need to feel that “I will never do that again!”.  Rather choose you facial plastic surgeon most carefully next time.

As Billy Crystal says, “When you look Mahvelous, you feel Mahvelous”.

Good luck and be well!
