As we age, our faces lose volume and with this volume loss, signs of aging appear. Brows descend, bags develop under the eyes, cheeks drop, jowls appear and most distressing, numerous wrinkles emerge. The effect is similar to the loss of volume as a "youthful" grape becomes an "aged" raisin. To restore the raisin, it must be inflated. Likewise, the human face needs volume added to restore its youthful appearance. The greatest advantage of fat grafting is safety, as the product comes from the patient's own fat stores. When fat is harvested there is usually more than enough to use on the entire face. When done correctly it is a permanent filler.
Fat grafting is rapidly growing in popularity not only because of the natural appearance, but because the procedure is performed with essentially no incisions. Fat grafting is performed in a sterile operating room with the patient under mild sedation. There is very little discomfort or pain involved with this procedure and generally takes two to three hours to complete. Recovery time is between 1 to 3 weeks, depending upon the individual.
