Even with a healthy amount of weight loss, a person may still not be able to get rid of additional fat from under the chin and in the neck. Many know this as a “double chin,” which not only makes the face appear unpleasant but can also affect a person’s self-confidence. Liposuction is an excellent option for someone who wants to achieve a more defined chin and neck.
Liposuction of the neck can help a person get rid of excess fat. When combined with excision and tightening of the tissues under the chin, a person can achieve a satisfying outcome. Dr. Persky employs the latest and least invasive liposuction and neck surgery techniques to provide dramatic yet natural-looking results.
This Procedure Can Correct:
- Excess fat in the neck and under the chin
- Hanging skin below the chin and on the neck
- Loose, hanging neck bands
Someone who has excessive fullness under the chin caused by fat and skin laxity may be a good candidate for liposuction of the neck. Neck liposuction is a less than one-hour surgical procedure performed under general anesthesia; therefore, it is important that patients are in good health and have realistic expectations.
Dr. Persky will evaluate the skin and fat along your neck and chin and help you decide on the best treatment option for you. In cases where a “turkey gobble” is an issue along the neck midline, he may suggest having the excess skin removed and tightened at the same time as your liposuction procedure.
Incisions less than one-inch long are made along a hidden natural crease under the chin and behind each earlobe. Dr. Persky will remove excess fat tissue using liposuction. A chin or pre-jowl implant can also be added to provide a beautiful neck angle that corrects jowling. To correct a “wattle” hanging from under the chin, excess skin may be trimmed and tightened. Dr. Persky can also lift the subcutaneous tissues from the underlying muscle layer. Patients who have two midline neck bands (caused by the platysma muscle) can have them tightened with sutures through the same two-inch incision under the chin.
Patients may experience minimal discomfort following the procedure that can be controlled with oral analgesics. Tape and a bandage will be placed over the treatment area to hold the tissues in place. The neck tape is removed on post-op day five. Minimal bruising and swelling are normal, resolving within five to ten days. Patients may resume normal activities within seven to ten days.
Within a week or two, patients will notice a dramatic difference in the appearance of their chin and neck contours. The two factors that lead to excellent results with neck liposuction are 1) the actual removal of fat from between the skin and underlying muscle, and 2) during the first week of healing, the tape holds the skin in place while it adheres to and forms fibrous tissue to the underlying muscle. Patients can expect a more angled and natural neck and jawline that flatters the rest of their facial structure. The results are long lasting, and the fat that is removed is permanently gone. Many patients comment that their new slim neckline has incentivized them to lose excess weight and slim down the rest of their body.
