Otoplasty

One of my facial plastic surgery professors once taught me that the main job of an ear is to sit on the side of the head and not draw attention to itself. One rarely comments about the ears when describing another’s beauty. My goal with ear surgery is simply to create a structure that blends well into the patient’s appearance without drawing attention to itself.

The primary goal of Otoplasty for the protruding ear is to create a normal appearing ear with acceptable angles, symmetry, and form. Most patients undergoing Otoplasty are aged between 4 to 6 years old; therefore the procedure is usually done in the operating room under general anesthesia. For adults, the treatment can easily be done under local anesthesia.

The social implications of ear deformities for the developing child are well documented. Protruding ears are a frequent source of ridicule by peers and may contribute to a range of developmental abnormalities including social phobias and outright behavioral disturbances.

With this relatively safe, permanently effective, and quick procedure, patient’s ears are restored to a more natural position. The incisions are hidden behind the posterior ear crease. The healing time is about 5 to 7 days.
