Fraxel® laser treatments are a popular non-surgical option for those looking to improve their skin’s texture, tone, and appearance. Whether you’re targeting fine lines, sun damage, acne scars, or pigmentation, Fraxel® can help refresh and renew your skin. Some consider Fraxel® repair a preemptive strike against a surgical facelift. But just as important as the procedure itself is what happens afterward. Understanding the recovery process will help you get the best results with minimal stress. In this blog, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know about Fraxel® laser recovery, from day-by-day expectations to aftercare tips and how to maintain your results.
What Is the Recovery Time for Fraxel® Laser Treatment?
Recovery from a Fraxel® laser session can take anywhere from five to seven days for most people. During this time, your skin goes through visible changes that are part of the healing and rejuvenation process. Although downtime is relatively minimal compared to more invasive treatments, it’s important to follow your aftercare plan closely.
Factors that may affect your healing time include:
- The intensity (depth and percent of coverage) of the treatment
- Your skin type and sensitivity
- Your overall health and skincare habits
What Happens Right After a Fraxel® Treatment?
Immediately after your Fraxel® session, you can expect your skin to feel warm, similar to a sunburn. Fraxel® repair is an ablative laser, which means that the laser removes skin instantaneously. For the first 24 to 36 hours, the skin is open and there is minimal weepiness of serum. At about five days, the skin looks red like a sunburn. Redness and swelling are common and usually last a few days. At five to seven days, concealer and/or tinted sunblock may be used. The redness fades to pink during the second week. The skin returns to its normal color without any lines of demarcation anywhere from four to eight weeks, depending on the individual. Some people may also experience slight itching or tightness that is easily treated with lotion and antihistamines.
To help reduce discomfort:
- Use a cool compress
- Apply a gentle, hydrating moisturizer
- Avoid hot showers for the first 24 to 48 hours
- Patients may return to full workouts at five to seven days
Fraxel® Recovery Day-by-Day
-
- Day One (Day of Treatment): Your face may appear red and feel hot. There will be weeping of blood and serum. Swelling is normal, especially around the eyes. You’ll want to rest and avoid touching your skin except for the mild vinegar soaks as instructed. Sleep with your head elevated above your heart, using about two to three pillows.
- Day Two: Redness and swelling may peak. The skin is re-epithelialized, and weeping stops. You may start to notice a bronze or sandpaper-like texture on your skin. Continue to keep the skin moisturized and stay indoors. We ask our patients to avoid going out in daylight for seven days.
- Days Three and Four: Peeling and flaking may or may not begin at this point. This is a sign that your body is shedding damaged skin and revealing newer, smoother skin underneath. Do not pick or scrub the flaking skin.
- Days Five Through Seven: By the end of the week, most of the peeling will have subsided. Your skin may still look pink or slightly sensitive, but you’ll notice improvements in tone and texture.
- Beyond the First Week: If you undergo a Fraxel® re:pair treatment, your recovery will be a bit longer, as this is the most intense of the Fraxel® lasers. Avoid direct sun exposure for one week and expect facial redness to last anywhere from six to eight weeks. You may now use concealer and tinted sunblock when outdoors.
Fraxel® Aftercare Tips for Best Results
Your recovery experience will be much smoother if you follow a dedicated aftercare routine. Here are some helpful tips to protect and nourish your healing skin:
- Keep skin hydrated: Use a gentle, non-comedogenic moisturizer multiple times a day to avoid dryness and discomfort. If your skin continues to be dry, use Aquaphor or our post-laser balm.
- Avoid sun exposure: Your skin will be more sensitive to UV rays during recovery. Wear a wide-brimmed hat and use a physical zinc or titanium oxide-based sunblock with an SPF of 30 or higher when outdoors. Avoid chemical sunscreens.
- Skip active skincare products: Avoid products with retinol, exfoliating acids, or alcohol-based ingredients until your provider says it’s safe.
- Stay makeup-free: Do not wear makeup for at least five days after treatment. Let your skin breathe and heal naturally. When removing sunblock or make-up, do so very gently as the skin is extremely fragile.
- Sleep with your head elevated: This can help reduce swelling, especially in the first two days.
How Long Before I See Results?
Most people begin to notice visible improvements to their skin within one to two weeks after treatment. Your skin may look brighter, smoother, and more even. However, full results often take about six to nine months to appear, as collagen production continues beneath the surface.
Depending on your skin concerns, you may need a series of Fraxel® treatments spaced several weeks to months apart. Dr. Persky will create a personalized treatment plan during your consultation.
Maintaining Your Results
A Fraxel® laser treatment is an investment in yourself. To make the most of your session and maximize your results, maintain a consistent skincare routine and protect your skin from sun damage. Your post-treatment glow can last longer if you:
- Stay hydrated
- Use daily sunblock
- Follow a healthy diet rich in antioxidants
- Avoid smoking and limit alcohol consumption
Routine maintenance treatments may also be recommended every 6 to 12 months, depending on your skin’s needs.
