Facial proportions play a major role in framing the face. When the chin is too small, it can give the entire face an out of proportion, displeasing appearance. Having a weak chin or poor jawline gives the illusion that the nose is much bigger than it is, and this is usually considered unattractive for many men and women.

Alternatively, when the chin is too strong, it can give the face a robust or heavy appearance. Chin surgery, or mentoplasty, modifies the projection and shape of the chin to sculpt a pleasing jawline and refined profile. A well-balanced facial structure can rejuvenate facial contours, restore the natural ratios of the face proportions, and complement the facial aesthetic as a whole.

Michael A. Persky, M.D., can improve your facial proportions by enhancing your chin, ultimately boosting your confidence and overall quality of life. He performs mentoplasty for men and women in Encino, California.

Mentoplasty Can Improve:

  • Asymmetry and deficiencies in the face
  • Jowls
  • A weak chin
  • A weak jawline
  • A lack of separation between the jaw and neck
  • Deformities in the chin caused by injuries
  • The appearance of the neck

Am I a Candidate for Chin Surgery?

The ideal candidates for mentoplasty are unhappy with their chin projection and how it affects their profile and facial aesthetic. Mentoplasty can revamp both weak and aggressive chins to create a well-structured, shapely jawline. Patients seeking mentoplasty should be prepared both physically and mentally for surgery, as it is crucial to have a positive outlook and realistic expectations.

Candidates should also be in good health, not smoke, and have realistic expectations for their results.

What Is Discussed During My Chin Implant Surgery Consultation?

During your consultation, Dr. Persky will evaluate your chin and discuss your goals. He will help you decide if you are a good candidate for mentoplasty based on your health and your anatomy. Dr. Persky will go over your options and further educate you about the procedure and how he will use his natural artistic vision and experience to enhance your chin. Various types and sizes of chin implants can be used to customize the implant to each patient.

Before and after photographs of previous mentoplasty patients will also be reviewed to show you the results you can likely expect from your surgery. Computer imaging may also be used to give you an idea of what can be accomplished.

How Is Mentoplasty Performed?

Chin Augmentation

Mentoplasty is a quick and easy procedure with lasting results. Once general or local anesthesia is administered, Dr. Persky makes a small, one inch incision under the chin in the natural crease. The implant is placed anatomically below the muscle directly on the mandible bone in a small pocket created to accept the implant precisely. After implant placement, the incision is closed. The sutures are removed after about five days.

Chin Reduction

Patients with aggressive chins may desire for their chin to be less pronounced. This can be achieved with chin reduction. An incision is made beneath the chin or within the mouth. From here, excess bone and tissue is removed and the remaining bone is sculpted and contoured.

How Long Is My Chin Implant Recovery?

Dr. Persky will give you detailed post-op instructions that include what medications to take and how to care for the treatment area. You may experience some discomfort, which may be alleviated with medication. Swelling is also a common and temporary side effect of mentoplasty. Patients should avoid strenuous activities for at least four weeks, but normal activities and work may be resumed after one week once the sutures are removed.

When Will I See My Mentoplasty Results?

Results from mentoplasty are permanent. Patients can expect the scars to be hidden under the chin or inside the mouth; once healed, the incisions should be virtually undetectable. Patients can expect the improvements from mentoplasty to last a lifetime. The chin should feel normal to touch as the implant is located below the muscle on bone. In the rare event that the implant is no longer wanted, it can be easily removed in the office under local anesthesia.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is mentoplasty in Encino, CA?

Chin surgery cost varies from patient to patient. Cost factors include surgeon’s fees, facility fees, anesthesia fees, pre-operative tests, and post-operative appointments and dressings. You will be given an accurate price estimate during your consultation.

Financing options are available to help patients cover the cost of their surgery.

Can this surgery benefit both men and women?

Both men and women opt for chin implant surgery or chin reduction surgery to balance out their face and create more pleasing proportions. For women, most opt for techniques that will narrow the jawline and sculpt a nicely rounded chin. Alternatively, many men desire to have a stronger and more square chin and jawline.

Should I combine my mentoplasty with other facial surgeries?

Some patients choose to combine their chin surgery with other facial rejuvenation surgeries like facelift surgery or neck lift surgery. Other patients choose to combine their chin implant surgery with rhinoplasty (nose surgery) to sculpt the nose and create better facial proportions.

Is there a non-surgical alternative to chin implant surgery?

Some patients looking to augment the size of their chins find success with dermal fillers. Dermal fillers can help create temporary fullness to the chin. Most patients who opt for dermal fillers see results for 18 to 24 months before an additional treatment is necessary. BOTOX® Cosmetic may be used in the chin muscles to relax “cobblestone” dimpling as well as project the chin.
