“One should never trust a woman who tells one her real age. A woman who would tell one that would tell one anything.”
― Oscar Wilde

While  walking our dogs in the dog park I met an old, retired colleague who was a premier orthopedic surgeon in our community (and medical building).  He was wearing an old long sleeved shirt covered in rusty paint with green and red dried paint on his hands.  When he asked “What’s new in Encino?” I answered, “Cellulaze, a single minimally invasive cellulite treatment with a 3 year 93% patient satisfaction rate!”  To which he replied, “When I was practicing orthopedics, I could not have a 7% dissatisfaction rate, it was more like  2%.”  I agreed, and said that both what he practiced (Orthopedics), and what I practice (Facial Plastic Surgery) are nothing compared to say cardio-thoracic surgery where those surgeons must have an excellent day, every day, day in and day out.

My retired friend then surprised me by saying, “I’d feel much more comfortable operating as a cardio-thoracic surgeon that operating as you do on the face.  There is much more pressure operating on faces.”  He had spent his day painting a vintage mechanical game, thus explaining the multi-coloration of his shirt and hands.  He is an artist and appreciates what it takes to create beauty on a living face.   Unlike other parts of the body that plastic surgery is performed, a face cannot be covered with clothing.  The art work is there for the world to see for the rest of the patient’s life.  He then insight-fully stated, “I can’t imagine the amount of trust your patient’s must have to allow you to work on their face.”

The next morning just prior to beginning a blepharoplasty procedure on a young, beautiful actress, she looked up at me and said,”Doctor, I trust you, or obviously I wouldn’t be here.”  The American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery has a slogan, “Trust Your Face to a Facial Plastic Surgeon”.    I believe that a great portion of that trust is earned by the training, continuing medical education, and experience in practice over the years.  I am grateful for your trust in our practice, and take that trust most seriously.  When choosing your facial plastic surgeon, make sure that you find that trust before being treated.  Be well!
