The Wall Street Journal (10/12/10) carried an article by Laura Landro, an excellent writer and patient advocate (“The Informed Patient” ), entitled “Wrinkle Erasing for Starters”.  The article describes the “widening array of minimally invasive treatments…making facial work more accessible to many people, and becoming part of their regular upkeep.”  Facial filler injections, laser skin rejuvenation treatments, and other non-invasive facial procedures are increasing in popularity while surgical procedures are decreasing.

“Last year, the number of U.S. face-lifts, which can cost $6,000 to $15,000, fell 29% to 94,247 from a year earlier, and eyelid surgeries declined 23% to 149,943, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.  By contrast, injections with Botox and Dysport rose 3.8% to 2.6 million last year.”  Certainly the recession has affected patient spending on elective cosmetic procedures.

Bumping into a colleague this evening in the dog park, he told me about the article, saying that after patients spend money on these procedures, after a few years they “could have bought a new car.”  At which time I shared with him Joan Rivers’ philosophy that she would “rather see a beautiful youthful face get out of an old car rather than an old face getting out of a new car.”
