One of the signs of aging is the contrast of our skin between normal skin and skin that has pigment, age spots, liver spots, sun damaged skin; and what we try to do is diminish the contrast. There are multiple ways of doing that.

I find that the absolute best treatment is to use a fractional folium laser, it is called Fraxel dual; a one time treatment with about a 5-day period of peeling following the treatment, resulting in fresh skin. That treatment can be repeated once or twice after a few months, and the results are quite remarkable.

Some patients are quite ready for a laser procedure or the recovery; for those patients we would like to recommend purigenex masks. Purigenex was developed by a female physician in Huwaii; who had sun damaged skin; and she has the pictures of her results before and after, and they are quite remarkable. One of the things about purigenex masks is it is a once a week treatment with a mask, and everyday patients apply a collagen gel to their skin. What we found is that patients really like this product and we always worry they may get addicted to it.

Lastly there are some skin bleaching creams; the one we prefer at this time is Lytera, it is made by Skin Medica. What I found with hydroquinones and other stronger bleaching creams is that they are effective but when the patient stops using them, there is sometimes a rebound and the dark spots become even darker. So lasers, creams and masks are the way to get rid of your sun spots.
