Researchers in Seoul, South Korea have reported in the September 3, 2012 Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology that sleeping on pillowcases that contain copper oxide may improve skin’s appearance and reduce facial wrinkles.

“Copper upregulates the secretion of extracellular skin proteins and stabilizes the extracellular matrix once formed,” the researchers wrote. Therefore, they posited that sleeping on copper-containing pillowcases could improve skin texture.

To test this theory, the investigators examined the skin conditions of 61 participants (test group, n=30; control group, n=31) following four and eight weeks of sleeping on the copper oxide-containing pillowcases.

Using 3-D imaging analysis, researchers measured three roughness parameters, noting improvement after four and eight weeks in the test group, but no changes in the control group. Participants sleeping on the copper-containing pillowcases demonstrated a significant decrease of crow’s feet after four and eight weeks. The average reduction per month in the roughness parameters was approximately 9 percent.

“Sleeping on copper oxide-containing pillowcases results in reduction of wrinkles depth and overall improvement of skin appearance,” the authors concluded.

As with all medical studies, it is important to evaluate who sponsored the study, and take research information with “a grain of salt”, or in this case “a sliver of copper ore”. I am in the process of looking into that and will let you know if there is a copper pillow case manufacturer that supported the research with a grant and will share that information with you. For now, I’m going to take a nap on my spare change. Be well.
