Just stroke her earlobe and she’ll do anything. Anything. Ha ha!” From the movie, “Love, Bullets, and Blacktop”

Ear lobe repair has become a more popular procedure over the past few years. Pierced ear lobes often times are stretched or torn making it difficult to showcase those beautiful diamond stud earrings. Patients tired of poorly fitting earrings present to our practice to have their ear lobes repaired. In other cases, some earlobes have been stretched as body decoration, and as in the case of two of our patients last week who are enlisting in the armed services, they need their stretched earlobes repaired.

Earlobes can be stretched from pulling on the earrings by children or one’s self accidentally. Sleeping with earrings can result in G-d only knows what happens, but sometimes in the morning the earlobe can be ripped. In many cases wearing heavy earrings can be the culprit, while in others it is just the wear and tear (pun intended) of years of wearing the earrings.

Ear lobe repair is a relatively quick and easy procedure that we perform under local anesthesia in our office. It takes about 15 to 20 minutes. Fortunately, the ear lobes are not very sensitive (try pinching your ears while reading this) so there is very little, if any discomfort with the minor surgery. The stretched earlobe opening is usually excised circumferentially, and then sutured. There is no downtime. The stitches are removed after 5 days. Patients are told to return to our office for re-piercing of their ears 6 weeks after the repair if they wish. If the ears are re-pierced, small stainless steel or gold studs should be used. The studs are rotated daily and lightly cleansed with rubbing alcohol. Six weeks later, the studs are removed and those 2 carat diamonds can be worn.
